Feeling Out of Balance? Let’s Talk Chakras
Have you ever felt like no matter how much sleep you get, you’re still tired? Or maybe you keep running into the same challenges in your relationships, your creativity feels blocked, or you just can’t seem to focus? If you said yes, you’re not alone. These everyday struggles often signal that your energy might be out of balance.
In modern witchcraft, one of the most powerful tools we have for understanding our inner balance is the chakra system. While chakras come from ancient Indian traditions, many of us today work with them as a framework for connecting the physical, emotional, and spiritual. Think of them as a map of your inner world—a way of noticing where your energy flows freely and where it gets stuck.
What Are Chakras?
The word chakra is Sanskrit for “wheel,” and that’s precisely what they are imagined to be: spinning wheels of energy within the body. The chakra system is a fundamental aspect of spiritual traditions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and various forms of yoga, such as Tantra and Kundalini. In modern witchcraft, many of us weave chakra work into our rituals, crystal practice, or meditation to keep energy flowing.
Each chakra acts as a kind of energy hub. When they’re open and aligned, energy flows smoothly, and you feel grounded, empowered, and connected. When they’re blocked or imbalanced, you may notice emotional challenges, physical symptoms, or spiritual disconnection.
✨ It’s essential to honor the cultural roots of chakras. They come from Indian philosophy and spirituality, and while we adapt them into modern witchcraft practices, we hold respect for the traditions that gave us this wisdom.
The Seven Main Chakras
There are said to be many energy points in the body, but most witches work with the seven primary chakras that run along the spine from root to crown. Each has its own color, element, purpose, and set of associations. Let’s walk through them from top to bottom.
🩷 Seventh Chakra: Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)
The crown chakra is your gateway to the divine. It represents spiritual awakening, a connection to the universe, and a sense of being part of something bigger than yourself. When it’s balanced, you may feel peaceful, guided, and aligned with your higher purpose. When it’s blocked, you might feel disconnected, uninspired, or spiritually adrift.
Location: Top/center of the head
Color: Violet/white
Element: Thought/Spirit
Focus: Spiritual connection, enlightenment, and higher purpose
Affirmation: “I am one with my higher self and the Divine.”
Crystals: amethyst, clear quartz, lepidolite
Herbs: Frankincense, sandalwood
👉 Practice: Place a white or violet candle on your altar and light it while meditating. Anoint your crown with a drop of frankincense oil and speak your affirmation as an incantation, calling in divine wisdom.
💜 Sixth Chakra: Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)
The third eye chakra is the center of intuition and inner vision. It’s where wisdom, imagination, and clarity come together. When open, this chakra helps you trust your instincts and gain a broader perspective. When blocked, you may feel mentally foggy, indecisive, or doubtful of your own inner knowing.
Location: Center of forehead, between brows
Color: Indigo
Element: Light
Focus: Intuition, wisdom, imagination, and clarity
Affirmation: “I trust my inner vision and higher guidance.”
Crystals: Lapis lazuli, sodalite, amethyst
Herbs: Clary sage, lemongrass
👉 Practice: Keep a tarot card (like The High Priestess or The Moon) near your third eye during meditation. You can also scry into a bowl of water or a crystal ball while visualizing indigo light swirling at your forehead.
🩵 Fifth Chakra: Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)
The throat chakra is the seat of your voice, both literally and symbolically. It governs communication, creativity, and the courage to speak your truth. When balanced, your words flow with honesty and ease. When blocked, you may feel silenced, misunderstood, or afraid to share your authentic self.
Location: Throat/neck
Color: Blue
Element: Sound
Focus: Communication, self-expression, speaking truth
Affirmation: “I speak my truth with clarity and compassion.”
Crystals: Aquamarine, turquoise, angelite
Herbs: Lavender, chamomile
👉 Practice: Carve your affirmation into a blue candle, dress it with lavender oil, and let it burn while you speak your truth aloud. Singing or chanting during ritual also strengthens this chakra’s magic.
💚 Fourth Chakra: Heart Chakra (Anahata)
The heart chakra bridges the physical and spiritual, connecting our lower and upper energy centers. It’s the home of compassion, love, and empathy. When it’s open, love flows easily to yourself and others. When blocked, you may struggle with trust, forgiveness, or feeling isolated, even in close relationships.
Location: Center of chest
Color: Green (sometimes pink)
Element: Air
Focus: Love, compassion, connection, forgiveness
Affirmation: “I give and receive love freely and unconditionally.”
Crystals: Rose quartz, emerald, green aventurine
Herbs: Rose, geranium, eucalyptus
👉 Practice: Add rose petals or green aventurine to your ritual bath. Place a green or pink candle on your altar, and whisper blessings of love over it before lighting. You might also enchant a sachet with herbs like rose and thyme to carry with you.
💛 Third Chakra: Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)
The solar plexus chakra is your inner fire. It’s the spark of personal power, confidence, and determination that governs your sense of self-worth and the courage to take action. When balanced, you feel motivated and in control of your life. When blocked, you might doubt yourself, avoid risks, or feel powerless.
Location: Just above the navel
Color: Yellow
Element: Fire
Focus: Confidence, self-worth, personal power
Affirmation: “I am strong, capable, and confident in my choices.”
Crystals: Citrine, amber, sunstone
Herbs: Ginger, bergamot, grapefruit
👉 Practice: Write your fears or self-doubts on a slip of paper. Burn it in a fire-safe dish with a yellow candle to transform that energy into confidence. Spells for empowerment and success align beautifully here.
🧡 Second Chakra: Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)
The sacral chakra is your center of pleasure, creativity, and emotional flow. It’s tied to sexuality, desire, and the ability to experience joy fully. When it’s open, you feel expressive, inspired, and comfortable in your body. When blocked, you may feel creatively stuck, emotionally numb, or disconnected from intimacy.
Location: Lower abdomen, just below the navel
Color: Orange
Element: Water
Focus: Creativity, pleasure, sexuality, flow
Affirmation: “I honor my desires and create with joy.”
Crystals: Carnelian, orange calcite, fire opal
Herbs: Orange, cinnamon, sandalwood
👉 Practice: Craft a charm bag with carnelian, cinnamon, and orange peel, then carry it when you want to spark creativity or passion. Dancing under the moonlight (especially a waxing moon) is another witchy way to charge this chakra.
❤️ First Chakra: Root Chakra (Muladhara)
The root chakra is your foundation and your sense of safety, security, and belonging. It anchors you to the physical world and provides stability for the rest of your energy system. When balanced, you feel grounded, supported, and secure. When blocked, you may struggle with fear, anxiety, or a sense of instability.
Location: Base of the spine
Color: Red
Element: Earth
Focus: Stability, safety, grounding
Affirmation: “I am safe, supported, and rooted to the Earth.”
Crystals: Garnet, jasper, hematite
Herbs: Patchouli, vetiver, cedarwood
👉 Practice: Sprinkle a circle of salt or lay down black tourmaline at the corners of your home for grounding protection. Burn a red candle dressed with patchouli oil during root chakra meditations to strengthen your sense of stability.
Why Work with Chakras?
Chakra balancing is more than just a wellness buzzword. It’s about caring for your whole being. By working with your chakras, you can:
Feel more connected to your body and spirit
Identify the root causes of challenges rather than just symptoms
Unlock creativity and confidence
Build resilience against stress
Deepen your magical and spiritual practice
Different cultures have their own systems of life force energy, including prana in India, chi in China, ki in Japan, and pneuma in Greece. Chakras are one expression of this universal idea, reminding us that energy flows through all living things.
Practices to Balance Your Chakras
🌬 Meditation
Visualize each chakra as a glowing orb in its corresponding color. Inhale light into it, exhale anything heavy or stagnant. Work from root to crown, then imagine energy flowing back down, creating a loop.
🧘 Yoga
Many yoga poses target chakras:
Root: Mountain or Tree Pose
Sacral: Pigeon Pose
Solar Plexus: Boat Pose
Heart: Camel or Bridge Pose
Throat: Shoulder Stand
Third Eye: Child’s Pose
Crown: Savasana
🔊 Mantras
Sound vibrations are powerful. Chant these seed syllables (bija mantras) for each chakra:
Root: Lam
Sacral: Vam
Solar Plexus: Ram
Heart: Yam
Throat: Ham
Third Eye: Om
Crown: Silence
💎 Crystals
Place stones that align with each chakra on your body during meditation or carry them throughout the day. Their vibration supports alignment.
🌙 Chakras in Witchcraft
For witches, chakra work can be treated as spellcraft. Each time you focus on a chakra, you’re setting an intention (balance and flow), gathering correspondences (crystals, herbs, colors, oils), and directing energy (through meditation, ritual, or mantra) toward your goal.
You might:
Light a candle in the chakra’s color while doing ritual work.
Place chakra crystals on your altar to amplify the energy.
Speak affirmations as incantations, letting your words become spells.
Align chakra meditations with moon phases or sabbats for added potency.
By weaving chakra practices into your craft, you transform energy work into intentional magic, which brings both your witchy tools and your inner world into harmony.
Final Thoughts
Your chakras are like an inner roadmap to balance and wholeness. By tuning into them, you’re not just working on your energy, you’re creating harmony across your body, mind, and spirit. Whether you’re meditating, using crystals, chanting mantras, or simply checking in with yourself, chakra work can help you feel more grounded, vibrant, and connected.
Remember, chakras are part of Indian spiritual traditions. As modern witches, we can honor these roots while respectfully adapting the practices to our own paths.
