Start Here if you don't know what a chakra is.

❤️ What Is the Root Chakra?

The Root Chakra, also called the Base Chakra or Muladhara in Sanskrit, sits at the base of your spine near your tailbone. It’s the very first chakra in the system, and as an airy Gemini Sun, it’s the one I come back to again and again to bring me back to Earth.

Think of it like your personal root system. Just as trees send roots deep into the soil to keep themselves steady, your Root Chakra anchors you to your body and the earth. It governs safety, survival, and stability. When this chakra is balanced, you feel secure and grounded. When it’s wobbly? Everything else feels a little shaky, too.

I can always tell my Root Chakra needs some love when I feel restless, anxious, or like I can’t quite settle into myself. For witches, this chakra is our soil. Without strong roots, our magic has nothing solid to grow from.

⚖️ Signs of Root Chakra Imbalance

Our energy doesn’t always flow evenly, and the Root Chakra is no exception. Sometimes it’s blocked (underactive), other times it’s spinning out (overactive). Here’s how I notice the difference:

Underactive Root Chakra

This feels like being untethered, foggy, or checked out. Common signs include:

  • Wanting to withdraw or disconnect

  • Feeling exhausted or unmotivated

  • Struggling with boundaries or self-discipline

  • A deep fear of change

  • Chronic disorganization

  • Feeling depressed or unusually passive

Overactive Root Chakra

This feels more like buzzing, grasping, or trying to over-control everything. You might notice:

  • Frequent anxiety or paranoia

  • Aggression or dominant behavior

  • Obsession with money or possessions

  • Overeating or reaching for “comfort” foods

  • Restlessness or overexercising

  • Confusion about your future

👉 If more than a few of these sound familiar, your root energy may be out of balance. (I’ve had times where I’ve ticked almost every box on the list; it happens to all of us.)

Want to go deeper?

If you checked three or more signs on either list, your Root Chakra could use some attention. I’ve created a printable Witch’s Root Chakra Checklist you can download and keep in your grimoire. ✨

🔮 Witchcraft Tools for Root Chakra Healing

Here’s where you can use witchcraft to help! We can lean into correspondences to bring the Root Chakra back into balance.

Crystals

When I feel scattered, I slip hematite in my pocket or meditate with smoky quartz. My go-to root chakra crystals include:

  • Garnet: passion and vitality

  • Hematite: grounding and protection

  • Smoky Quartz: dissolves fear

  • Bloodstone: resilience and courage

  • Black Tourmaline: shields negative energy

Herbs

I like to reach for these herbs when I need support for my Root Chakra:

  • Patchouli: grounding and protective

  • Vetiver: soothing anxious energy

  • Cedarwood: stability and strength

  • Basil: prosperity and protection

  • Myrrh: grounding in both body and spirit

Other Tools, Materials and Correspondences

  • Color: Red — the color of blood, earth, and fire. Use red candles, fabrics, or clothing to strengthen Root energy and remind yourself of vitality and protection.

  • Element: Earth — bring soil, stones, or wooden tools to your altar as offerings to ground and stabilize your practice.

  • Shape: Square — represents strong foundations and structure. Incorporate squares in your altar layout, crystal grids, or even your journaling frames.

  • Symbol: Tree Roots — meditate on or draw root imagery to remind yourself of connection, strength, and belonging.

  • Deities & Archetypes — Earth Mother figures, ancestors, and land spirits often resonate with Root Chakra work. Archetypes like the Protector, the Provider, or the Ancestor can also guide your practice here.

Spells and Rituals for the Root Chakra

Here are three of my favorite root-healing practices:

🕯️ Grounding Candle Spell

This spell calls in stability and protection while rooting you deeply into the earth’s energy.

You’ll need:

  • A red candle (for Root Chakra energy and vitality)

  • Patchouli or vetiver oil (for grounding)

  • Hematite or smoky quartz (for stability and protection)

Steps:

  1. Carve the word “safety” or “root” into the candle.

  2. Dress the candle with patchouli or vetiver oil, rubbing it from the middle outward.

  3. Place the crystal at the base of the candle.

  4. Light the flame and visualize a deep red glow at the base of your spine growing brighter.

  5. Repeat: “I am grounded, I am safe, I am whole.” Allow the candle to burn safely until complete, or snuff it out and relight as needed.

🧱 Stability Sachet

This sachet is designed to anchor you in safety and grounded energy. By strengthening your foundation, you naturally invite prosperity and abundance to flow into your life.

You’ll need:

  • A small red pouch (for protection and Root Chakra energy)

  • Cedar (stability and strength)

  • Basil (grounding, with a touch of prosperity)

  • Garnet (vitality, courage, and root support)

Steps:

  1. Hold each ingredient in your hands before placing it into the pouch, charging it with the intention of stability and safety.

  2. Whisper: “I am rooted, I am safe, I am whole. From strong roots, prosperity flows.”

  3. Carry the sachet with you or keep it near your altar to anchor your energy.

🌲 Earth Connection Ritual

This ritual reconnects your body and spirit with the earth, bringing calm, safety, and balance to your Root Chakra.

You’ll need:

  • A quiet outdoor space (grass, soil, or stone)

  • Comfortable clothes (optional but recommended)

Steps:

  1. Stand barefoot on the earth and take three deep, steady breaths.

  2. Close your eyes and imagine roots extending from your feet and tailbone into the soil.

  3. As you breathe, feel these roots anchoring you deeper with each exhale.

  4. Chant the mantra “Lam” (pronounced lahm) in rhythm with your breath, letting the sound vibrate through your body.

  5. Stay in this visualization for at least five minutes, or until you feel grounded and secure.

🧘 Everyday Practices for Witches

You don’t need a full ritual every time you want to work on your Root Chakra. Here are a few little things I weave into daily life that you could try too:

  • Visualization: Red roots extending from your body into the earth.

  • Yoga: Mountain Pose or Child’s Pose when you feel unsteady.

  • Meditation: Breathing red light into your tailbone area.

  • Affirmations:

    • “I am safe and supported by the earth.”

    • “I trust my foundation.”

    • “I am grounded, present, and whole.”

  • Journaling prompts:

    • Where do I feel most rooted in my life?

    • What does “safety” mean to me?

    • What daily practices help me feel supported?

⚖️ Signs of a Balanced Root Chakra

When you’ve done the work, here’s what balance often feels like:

  • Steady energy that lasts through the day

  • Comfort in your body and home

  • A deep sense of safety and belonging

  • Stability in career or finances

  • Joy in the simple, everyday rhythms of life

For me, it’s that quiet confidence—knowing the ground won’t fall out from under me.

🌟 Final Thoughts 🌟

The Root Chakra is where everything begins. It’s not glamorous or flashy—it’s the dirt under your nails after planting seeds, the steady hum of your heartbeat, the strength you feel when your feet are firmly on the ground.

When you nurture your roots, your magic has space to grow wild and strong. So take the time to ground, to breathe, and to remember: you are safe, supported, and unshakably rooted in the earth’s energy.

Root yourself, and your magic will rise.
