Beginner’s Guide to Crystals: Part 2 - How to Use Crystals in Your Witchcraft Practice
[Updated August 2025]
This is Part 2 in a three-part series — Read Part 1 here.
Welcome back! By now, you’ve chosen a few crystals, maybe even cleansed and charged them. Now it’s time to put them to use. Crystals are magical tools, and like any part of your witchcraft practice, how you use them should feel intuitive, purposeful, and personal. There’s no one right way, so explore and find what works for you.
Here are a few ways witches commonly work with crystals, from spellwork to self-care.
Keep Crystals Close
Start simple. Carry a crystal in your pocket, slip one into your bra, or tuck one into your bag. Think of it like a charm or talisman. If you need courage, carry Tiger’s Eye. For grounding, try Black Tourmaline. For love and healing, Rose Quartz is a solid choice.
Hold Sodalite when you need a moment of focus. Set Carnelian on your desk while you work. Place Amethyst under your pillow to influence your dreams. This low-effort approach helps you get used to each stone’s energy and lets the magic blend naturally into your daily life.

The Illustrated Directory of Healing Crystals by Cassandra Eason.
Add Them to Spells and Rituals
Crystals shine brightest when used with intention. Add them to any spell the way you would herbs, candles, or oils. Think of their energetic correspondences:

Before a ritual, choose a crystal that supports your goal. Hold it while you speak your spell aloud. Set it beside your candle, or place it inside a spell jar. You can also use a crystal as a focal point during meditation or visualization.
Work with Chakras
In witchcraft, and New Age spirituality, energy centers (or chakras) are often used in healing work. Each chakra is linked to certain colors, elements, and intentions. Crystals help bring these energy centers back into alignment.
Lay down and place a crystal on the part of your body that matches the chakra you're working on:
Root (base of spine): Red Jasper, Hematite

Spend a few minutes breathing and letting the energy flow. This is a great practice during the New Moon or after a stressful week.
Make Crystal Elixirs (Safely!)
Crystal elixirs are another witchy favorite. These are waters that have been charged with the energy of a crystal. You can sip the water, use it in spellwork, or even spritz it around your space.
⚠️Important⚠️ Not all crystals are water-safe. Some can dissolve or leach toxic minerals. Always use the indirect method if you’re unsure: place the crystal in a sealed glass jar, then place that jar inside a bowl of water. The energy still transfers, safely.

Use moon water for extra magic. Let your elixir sit under the Full Moon for a few hours to charge it up. Then bottle it, label it, and use as needed.

Create a Crystal Grid
Crystal grids are a beautiful way to focus your magic. You’ll arrange multiple crystals in a pattern to direct energy toward a specific intention.
Here’s how:
Choose your intention (love, abundance, clarity, etc.).
Pick a center crystal that represents this intention.
Surround it with smaller supporting stones.
Place the grid somewhere undisturbed.
Activate it by tracing lines between the stones (with your finger, wand, or athame), focusing on your goal.
Grids are great for long-term goals or big life shifts. Refresh the energy every week or so.
Use Crystals in Ritual Baths
Combine water magic with crystal energy. Add crystals (outside the tub is safest!) along with herbs, salts, and candles. This is perfect for Full Moon release work or self-love rituals.
Try this:
Rose Quartz + Lavender for self-love
Amethyst + Epsom salt for stress relief
Carnelian + citrus peel for creativity
Light a candle, set your intention, and soak in the energy.
Meditate with Crystals
Crystals can help you stay focused during meditation. Hold one in your hand or place it nearby. Set an intention or simply allow its energy to guide your practice. Amethyst, Clear Quartz, and Selenite are popular choices for clarity and connection.
You can also meditate on a specific question or goal. Let the crystal become a bridge between your thoughts and your intuition.
Final Thoughts
Crystals are flexible, friendly tools in witchcraft. They don’t require rules, but they respond well to care, intention, and consistency. Let them be a part of your craft in ways that feel natural. Don’t be afraid to experiment.
In Part 3, we’ll talk about different shapes of crystals, working with others (including pets and plants), and how to make your own crystal magic even stronger. See you there!
